Cuba Daily Itinerary (B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner)
Day 1 Tuesday (D) | Depart for Havana, Cuba (the itinerary may change based on flight arrival times)
Welcome to Cuba! Upon arrival, you are met by your tour manager and transfer to your "casa
particulares" for check in. Since 2009 Cuban families have been permitted to rent rooms out of their family
homes to foreigners to supplement their meager incomes. Located in the residential, tree-lined district of Vedado, our casas are located just two blocks from the American Embassy as well as the seawall and are close together in a single neighborhood for ease of group cohesion and authentic cultural immersion. You will truly be "in support of the Cuban people" as they feature comfortable accommodations with private bathrooms and ample privacy. The casas are strictly regulated for their integrity of operations. You are welcomed with a brief orientation.
If time permits based on flight arrival times your private bus will continue your cultural immersion with a walking tour of Old Havana. Wander through the Plaza Vieja, the oldest plaza in Havana, dating from the 16th century. See the Plaza de San Francisco, a cobbled plaza surrounded by buildings dating from the 18th century, dominated by the baroque Iglesia and Convento de San Francisco dating from 1719. Visit Plaza de la Catedral and the Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Habana. Visit the Plaza de Armas, a scenic tree- lined plaza formerly at the center of influence in Cuba. It is surrounded by many of the most historic structures in Havana as well as important monuments.
Your Welcome Dinner provided in a local privately owned (paladar) restaurant Cuban famous for its black beans, baked chicken and large family style portions.
Day 2 Wednesday (B,L)| Havana - A Day of Art and Education
Breakfast with your hosts before boarding your bus to visit “Fusterlandia”, home and neighborhood of Jose Fuster, known as the “Picasso of the Caribbean” for his amazing and world famous ceramic artistry. You will interact with the local neighborhood regarding the impact Fuster has had on the Cuban art culture.
From there you private bus will take you to a breathtaking performance of one of Cuba's most famous dance troupes, Compas Dance!. This culturally immersive group has performed in many counties as well as the United States.
Lunch provided at El Rejoneo, a one of a kind paladar where you cook your own food on hot rocks at your table. Very cool.
You will then meet with a faculty member of the University of Havana to learn about the effect of the American Mafia on the country of Cuba in the 40's and 50's. Included will be a visit to the island's most famous hotel, the Nacional where you will receive a welcome mojito and visit it's very popular "Hall of Fame".
You will board your bus to visit the Museum of the Revolution, which holds hundreds of artifacts from pre and post revolutionary times highlighting the tense relationship between the U.S. and Cuba. Combine this with a visit to Revolution Square and you will have a very clear picture of the Cuban revolution and the ensuing government as known today. Return to your casa. Dinner on your own.
Day 3 (B,L) | Havana - Viñales Valley Farmland Day Trip
Breakfast with your hosts before boarding your bus departing for Pinar del Rio, Cuba's western-most province, famous for its rich soil, tobacco production and spectacular scenery. Considered by many to be the most beautiful place in Cuba, the Viñales Valley National Monument holds stunning landscapes. The area is also famous for being the premier tobacco growing area in the world. Receive a personally guided tour by Montesino, a 4th generation tobacco plantation owner who will educate you to the intricacies bringing this Cuban staple crop from seed to dried leaves ready for delivery to the tobacco factories. Once you become educated with this growing process you will transfer to Pinar del Riocigar factory to see the how the final cigar product is completed and moved to the open market.
Lunch provided at one of only a handful of 100% organic farms on the island. No pesticides or any chemicals are given to the animals or used on the crops. An educational tour will be provided of the farm after lunch. Your learning focuses upon the organic farm-to-table enterprises of sustainable agriculture.
You will then return to Havana and your casas.
Day 4 (B,L) | Havana - A Day of Education and Hemingway
Breakfast with your hosts before boarding your bus to visit and interact with elementary school children and teachers. Learn how Cuban children matriculate through the education process. Discuss with teachers the positive points of American primary education versus the Cuban process. We ask that everyone bring at least one lined notebook with pencils for the kids .
You will then visit Ernest Hemingway's home which has been made into a fascinating museum. Learn more about the great American writer and his influence on the Cuban culture
Lunch provided at a local paladar Arte Chef where you will be given cooking lesson from authentic Cuban chef..
Dinner on your own
Later that evening you will attend the famous Cannon Ceremony held each night at nine o'clock at the La Cabaña Fortress. You will discuss the cultural significance of this three hundred year old event with local Cubans and what role it played on shaping the current patriotic landscape. We will then return to your casa to spend time with your Cuban hosts and share your views of the American way of life.
Day 5 (B,L) | Havana -Playa Giron - Cienfuegos Travel Day
Last breakfast with your Havana hosts before boarding bus headed to the "Pearl of Cuba", Cienfuegos. This pristine country city is located on the South shore of Cuba about a 3 hour journey and is the only Cuban city founded by the French. Along the way you will visit the Bay of Pigs Museum in Playa Giron and learn about this vitally important event in U.S-Cuban relations. Take a dip in the warm Caribbean ocean. Bring bathing suits.
A special lunch will be provided at a local paladar where you will be met by the chef and shown how to prepare his special lobster dish. Possibly join in on some cooking.
Upon arrival in Cienfuegos you will check into your new casas and meet your hosts.
The remainder of the evening will be spent immersing with your hosts. Dinner on your own.
Day 6 (B,L) | Cienfuegos - Trinidad Day Trip
Breakfast with your hosts before boarding our bus for a 1.5 hour day trip to the very historic city of Trinidad. The second oldest city in Cuba was given the UNESCO designation in 1988 as a World Heritage site. You will traverse the cobblestone streets and visit San Francisco de Paula famous for being the only church in Latin America with a seated Jesus Christ. You will have the opportunity to spend time immersing with the locals before lunch. After your bus will transfer you to El Cubano, located in the Topes de Collantes mountain region where a guided 2 mile hike though beautiful flora ending at the famous El Cubano waterfall. Bring your bathing suit and take a dip in the refreshing cool mountain water. After the trek back down your bus will be waiting for the trip back to Cienfuegos to complete the day. Dinner on your own.
Day 7 (B,L,D) | Cienfuegos Explore and Learn
Breakfast with your hosts. Today will be a day to explore and get to know the countryside city of Cienfuegos.
A full day of Cuban culture with an opportunity to mingle with and exchange view and ideas with the local Cubans. Take a walking guided tour of one of the most famous cemeteries on the island.
A special "Farewell Dinner" at Casa Prado is provided.
Day 8 (B) | Depart Cienfuegos for Return to Havana
Breakfast with your hosts before checking out of our accommodations and board your bus headed back to Jose Marti Airport in Havana for departure flight. Your "In support of the Cuban people" trip concluded.
